The Salty Dog

The Salty Dog

the salty dog cocktail

This refreshing classic is easy to make if grapefruit juice is available in the minibar stash or is easy to pick up. No salt? No problem. LA-based bartender Alex Day offers up his Salt Hack: head to the vending machine and grab a bag of pretzels. There is usually a pinch or two of salt at the bottom of the bag. In a real pinch, you could also crush potato chips or tortilla chips for an unusual salty/savory rim.

Below you will find the recipe for The Salty Dog, from Road Soda by Kara Newman, released Fall 2017 by our publishing imprint Dovetail.

The Salty Dog
Makes 1 serving

2 ounces vodka or gin
3 ounces grapefruit juice
1 lime wedge
Salt
  1. Moisten the edge of a serving glass with the lime wedge or, if you don't have the lime, with a bit of grapefruit juice. Dust the rim with a pinch of salt.
  2. Fill the rimmed glass with ice.
  3. Add the vodka (or gin) and grapefruit juice and stir briefly.
