The Sour Cherry Shandy

October 09, 2015

Usually a mixture of beer and lemonade, a shandy is a low-alcohol drink that’s the perfect antidote for the summer heat. While shopping the local summer greenmarket, we spotted a variety of sour and sweet cherries that were begging to be muddled into a cocktail.

Pairing the ripe cherries with a crisp lager, lime juice and a bit of cane sugar resulted in a frothy shandy that is just right for sipping outdoors on a hot afternoon.

The Sour Cherry Shandy
Makes two drinks

  • 1 shot Cointreau
  • 1 shot lime juice
  • 2 cubes cane sugar
  • 16 cherries plus 2 for garnish (use a mix of sour and sweet cherries)
  • 2 bottles lager
  1. Add the cherries and cane sugar to The Mason Shaker.
  2. Muddle the ingredients in the bottom of the shaker until throughly mashed.
  3. Add Cointreau and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice to just above the liquid, and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
  4. Strain the cocktail into two glasses filled with ice, fill with lager and garnish with remaining cherries.
