National Bourbon Day falls on the anniversary of the day (June 14) that the first distilled whiskey was made from corn in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Never one to let a good drinking holiday pass us up, we decided to make a delicious Kentucky bourbon-based cocktail to celebrate the occasion.
A smash is a cocktail that consists of shaved or crushed ice, peak-season fruit, an herb, sugar and a spirit base. For the Blackberry Bourbon Smash, we utilize fresh greenmarket blackberries, fragrant mint, lemon juice and our go-to Kentucky bourbon, Bulleit. Whether you're watching the sunset by the beach or relaxing on the porch, you're going to want to have this cocktail in-hand.
The Blackberry Bourbon Smash
Makes 2 drinks
- 3 shots bourbon (we like Bulleit)
- 1.5 shots turbinado simple syrup
- 1.5 shots fresh lemon juice
- 4 sprigs mint (plus 2 for garnish)
- 10 blackberries (plus 2 for garnish)
- Muddle mint and blackberries in The Mason Shaker.
- Add remaining ingredients and ice to just above the level of liquid. Cap and shake for five seconds.
- Strain into two rocks glasses filled with crushed ice. Garnish with remaining mint and blackberries.
